Frequently Asked Questions

Dimensional inspection and metrology services involve precisely measuring manufactured parts to verify they conform to engineering drawings, CAD models, and design specifications. This includes verifying size, geometry, feature location, surface characteristics, and tolerances using calibrated measurement equipment such as CMMs, optical systems, and laser scanners. For manufacturers in aerospace, automotive, and medical device production, dimensional inspection is a critical step in quality assurance and regulatory compliance.

Dimensional inspection catches nonconforming parts before they reach assembly, shipping, or a customer’s production line — where corrections become exponentially more expensive. It provides objective, documented evidence that parts meet specification, supports compliance with industry standards such as AS9100 and ISO 13485, and gives your customers confidence in the integrity of your manufacturing process. For regulated industries, inspection records are often a contractual or audit requirement.

We provide a wide range of measurement capabilities, including:

  • 3D dimensional inspection
  • GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) analysis
  • Surface and feature measurement
  • First article inspection (FAI)
  • Gage R&R studies

A First Article Inspection (FAI) is a formal verification process that confirms a new or modified production process is capable of producing parts that fully meet design specifications. IMS performs AS9102-compliant FAIs that include complete dimensional reporting, GD&T characteristic accountability, and supporting documentation — the same standard required by major aerospace and defense programs. If you’re a supplier being asked to submit a FAIR (First Article Inspection Report), IMS can handle the dimensional portion and deliver report-ready data.

Yes. IMS is ANAB-accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 (Certificate #AC-2870), which means our calibration lab meets the highest internationally recognized standard for measurement competence and traceability. We provide NIST-traceable calibration for a wide range of precision measuring instruments. Calibration is a separate service from dimensional inspection, but both can be coordinated through IMS.

Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) is a statistical study that evaluates how much variation in your measurement data comes from the measurement system itself — the equipment and the operators — versus actual part variation. If your Gage R&R results are poor, your inspection data can’t be trusted regardless of how good your parts are. IMS performs Gage R&R studies as a standalone service or as part of a broader process capability evaluation. It’s particularly valuable before launching a new production line or qualifying a new measurement process.

Yes. IMS offers both in-lab inspection at our Tempe, AZ facility and onsite inspection at your location, depending on part size, volume, and project requirements. Onsite service is often the right choice for large or difficult-to-transport parts, production floor integration, or situations where shipping adds unacceptable risk. Contact us to discuss which approach fits your project.

IMS utilizes advanced metrology systems including:

  • CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines) — 3-axis and multi-axis configurations
  • Multisensor measurement systems (OGP and Vision Engineering platforms)
  • Optical and video measurement systems
  • Laser scanning for point cloud and reverse engineering applications

All equipment is maintained under our ISO/IEC 17025 accredited quality system and calibrated to NIST-traceable standards.

Turnaround time depends on part complexity and volume, but our goal is always to deliver accurate results quickly to keep your production moving without delays.
